VIBRA-TITE VC-3 keeps red dot and scope mount screws from backing out under recoil without permanently locking them. Here's when to use it, how it compares to Loctite, and when to choose another fix.
Quick answer
If your red dot or scope mount screws keep loosening under recoil, VIBRA-TITE VC-3 is the fix to reach for first. It is a reusable, high-strength, anti-vibration threadlocker that grips tight without permanently locking fasteners, so you can still remove and re-torque screws for adjustments or battery changes. Use it on clean, degreased threads, torque to the mount maker's spec, and stop if the threads or screw holes are already damaged.
Symptom: screws that walk out after a range session
A red dot or scope that shifts zero, rattles slightly, or shows a loose mount screw after live fire is usually not a defective optic. The screw is backing out because recoil and vibration are working against the clamp load you set with a torque wrench. This is common on pistol optic plates, scope rings, and any accessory mounted to a picatinny rail.
The tell is repeatable: you tighten the screw, shoot 50 to 100 rounds, and it is loose again. If the screw only loosens once and stays put after a proper re-torque, you may not need a threadlocker at all.
Likely cause: vibration plus a fastener that can't hold tension
Fasteners loosen when vibration lets the screw rotate slightly, reducing the clamp load that holds the mount to the slide or rail. Oil, grease, or release agent left in the threads makes this worse because the screw cannot develop full friction. Over-torquing also backfires: it can stretch the screw or strip aluminum threads, which then never hold properly again.
This is why a vibration-resistant threadlocker matters more on firearms than on static equipment. The goal is not to glue the screw in place permanently but to add enough resistance that normal recoil cannot rotate it.
Corrective action: clean, apply, torque, and verify
Degrease the screw and the threaded hole with isopropyl alcohol and let them dry. Apply a small amount of VIBRA-TITE VC-3 to the screw threads, then torque to the mount manufacturer's specification, not to a generic number. VC-3 is reusable, so you can remove the screw later for a battery change or optic swap without fighting permanent red Loctite.
After the first range session, re-check the screws with a torque driver. A slight re-snug is normal as parts settle. If the screw holds after that, you are done.
When to stop and choose another option
Stop using threadlocker and address the hardware if the screw hole is stripped, the screw is bent, or the mount plate itself is cracked. No adhesive fixes damaged threads. If you need a permanent, high-temperature bond on a screw you never plan to remove, a traditional permanent threadlocker may be the better choice. If you swap optics often, VC-3's reusable formula is the advantage because it lets you remove and reinstall without reapplying every time.
If the mount still loosens after cleaning, correct torque, and VC-3, the problem is likely the mount or plate fit, not the threadlocker. In that case, replace the mount rather than adding more adhesive.
Diagnosis: is VC-3 the right fix for your loose mount?
- Screw loosens after every range session: Clean threads, apply VIBRA-TITE VC-3, torque to the mount maker's spec, and re-check after the next session. If it holds after one re-check, VC-3 solved it.
- Screw loosens even with threadlocker and correct torque: Inspect the mount plate, screw, and threaded hole for damage or poor fit. Replace the damaged part; more adhesive will not help.
- You swap optics or remove the mount often: Use VC-3 instead of a permanent threadlocker so screws can be removed and reused. Reusable is the deciding factor here.
Product facts
- VIBRA-TITE VC-3: VIBRA-TITE VC-3 is a 1ML capsule of red, high-strength, reusable threadlocker that resists vibration, shock, and loosening. The reusable formula lets you remove and reinstall optic mount screws for battery changes or swaps without reapplying a permanent locker, and the capsule size is enough for several mounts.
