Turn a hallway or garage wall into a dry fire range. Set up the IPSC Dryfire Target Set, place targets, and run structured drills without live ammo.
Quick answer
Mount the IPSC Dryfire Target Set on a wall at 6 feet from your shooting position, then run 10–15 minute sessions that mix draws, transitions, and reloads. Use scaled targets to simulate 7, 10, 15, 20, and 25 yards without leaving the room. Keep all live ammunition out of the training area and verify your pistol is empty before every rep.
Set up a safe dry fire space
Pick a wall with a solid backing and enough floor space to step back 6 feet. Remove all live ammunition from the room and store it in a separate location. Use a dedicated dry fire pistol or a chamber safety flag, and visually and physically check the chamber before you start. A garage, basement, or hallway works well as long as no one else can enter unexpectedly.
Position the targets for scaled distances
The IPSC Dryfire Target Set is scaled for 6 feet from the wall to simulate targets at 7, 10, 15, 20, and 25 yards. Arrange the five targets across the wall at different heights and angles to create transitions. Place the simulated 7-yard target slightly left or right of center, and put the 25-yard target near the edge. This forces you to move your eyes and muzzle instead of drilling one spot.
Plan a 15-minute dry fire routine
Start with 3 minutes of slow draws, then 5 minutes of target transitions between two or three targets. Add 4 minutes of reloads or malfunction clears, and finish with 3 minutes of one-shot accuracy drills. Use a timer or phone app to track par times. If you miss a target or fumble a reload, slow down rather than speeding up. Consistency beats round count in dry fire.
Track progress and adjust difficulty
Log your par times and hit ratios for each session. Once you can consistently hit all five targets in under 5 seconds from the draw, tighten the par time or add movement. If you are training for IPSC-style matches, set up two targets close together and practice wide transitions. For concealed carry, focus on drawing from your holster and getting the first shot on the 7-yard target.
Step-by-step dry fire setup
- Clear the room and your pistol: Remove all live ammunition, check the chamber, and use a barrel safety flag if you have one. Never skip this step. Verify visually and physically.
- Mount the targets at 6 feet: Use the included magnets or Gorilla tape to attach the five IPSC targets to a wall at 6 feet from your shooting position. Check that each target is secure and won't fall during drills.
- Arrange targets for transitions: Spread the targets across the wall at varying heights. Place the simulated 7-yard target near the center and the 25-yard target near the edge. Vary the layout each session to avoid memorizing one pattern.
- Run a 15-minute drill block: Do 3 minutes of draws, 5 minutes of transitions, 4 minutes of reloads, and 3 minutes of accuracy. Use a timer. Stop if you feel fatigued or start rushing. Quality reps only.
- Log and progress: Record par times and hit ratios. When you meet your goal, reduce par time or add movement. Review your log weekly to see improvement.
